WordPress or a Custom-Coded Site?

This is one of the first questions people ask when they have a website built. Both produce good sites; the right choice depends on what the site will do, who will update the content and how much it will grow. Below we compare the two paths with examples from our own work.

When is WordPress a good choice?

WordPress is strong if you want to manage the content yourself: you do not need to know code to add posts, pages, products and images. It is a mature platform for blogs, corporate sites and shops built with WooCommerce.

Ready-made themes give a quick start, but leaving everything to a theme can make a site heavy. That is why the theme can be hand-coded on WordPress too: we hand-coded the theme for the Nafiz Başaran boxing school and for Firmayap, and we also developed Firmayap's business directory plugin. For Hazır Tur we built a WordPress site with Elementor.

When is a custom-coded site a good choice?

If speed, a distinctive design and special behaviour come first, coding the site from scratch can be the better choice. Pages stay light because they carry no unnecessary plugin or theme code, and the design is not limited by a template.

For example, we hand-coded the Noxis Cosmetics shop site in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The torpilstudio.com you are reading right now is also built with Next.js, which lets us shape the animations, the two languages and the speed settings exactly as we want.

The cost: to change the content, either an admin panel has to be built or the developer makes the changes. If the content will change often, this needs to be planned from the start.

Security and upkeep

Because WordPress is the most widespread website platform in the world, it is also the most targeted. The core, theme and plugins need regular updates, and the number of plugins should be kept low. A custom-coded site usually has a smaller attack surface, but updating its dependencies and the server settings matter there as well.

So which one?

If you will update the content often yourself and a blog or shop matters, choose WordPress. If speed, a distinctive design and custom features come first, choose custom code. If you are in between, a hand-coded WordPress theme can combine the best of both.

We decide together at the start which one fits your work; just tell us what you need.
