How to Rank Higher on Google: An SEO Guide for Small Businesses

There is no shortcut to the top of Google, but the path is clear. We apply the steps in this guide to our own site: we look at which words people search, shape our pages around them and track the results in Search Console.

1. Can Google see your site?

First add your site to Google Search Console and submit a sitemap. The page indexing report shows which pages are on Google and why others are left out. A page that is not indexed shows up in no search at all.

2. Learn what people type

How do your customers type your service into Google? The suggestions in Google's search box and Google Trends are free ways to find out. In our own research, the most searched patterns in our field were 'how much is ...', 'I want to have ... made' and 'how to make ...'.

3. Page titles and descriptions

Each page title should include the search the page answers and stay around 60 characters. The description is a short summary that persuades people to click in search results. Each page needs its own title; pages with the same title compete with each other.

4. One page for each search

'Having a website made' and 'having an online shop made' are different searches and deserve different pages. A separate page for each service, a section answering common questions and real price and timeline information are what both Google and visitors look for.

5. Speed and phones

Google evaluates pages by their phone version. Measure your site with PageSpeed Insights; large images and unnecessary plugins are the most common causes of slowness.

6. Content: answer the questions

Posts that answer your customers' questions make you visible in 'how to' and 'how much' searches. Not long and empty, not short and incomplete; the post that really answers the question wins.

7. Backlinks and a Business Profile

Other sites linking to you is a trust signal for Google; a 'Design: company name' link on client sites, industry directories and social profiles are examples. To appear in the map results for searches with a city name, you need a Google Business Profile.

8. Patience and measurement

A new page takes weeks to find its place on Google, and months for competitive words. Check monthly which searches you appear for in Search Console and adjust your pages accordingly. Do not trust anyone who guarantees first place; Google guarantees nothing to anyone.
