Getting a FiveM Script Made: What to Know Before You Order
Published:
Start by describing your server stack
A script talks to the framework on the server (ESX, QBCore, Qbox) and to the inventory (ox_inventory, qb-inventory or another one). Writing these and their versions in your order is half the job; if they are unknown, the script either does not run or needs a bridge later.
If you use a custom inventory or a modified framework, say so at the start. A well written script keeps that connection in a single file, so only that file needs to change when the server changes.
Resmon: how much the script costs your server
Resmon shows, in milliseconds, how much CPU time a script uses on the player's computer. Needless per-frame loops push this number up, and when dozens of scripts stack, players feel it as frame drops.
Ask the seller for resmon measured in game: idle, in use and at the busiest moment. For Gunrack, the values we measured on our test server are 0.00 ms on foot and 0.01 ms in a loaded rack vehicle; instead of a per-frame loop it runs a light check every 300 ms.
Security: a script that does not trust the client
On FiveM, the player's computer can be tampered with. If every action that gives items, adds money or changes the inventory is not checked again on the server, items can be duplicated with cheats. Always ask "which actions are validated on the server?" in your order.
In Gunrack, on every store and take request the job, the vehicle, the seat, the distance and what is really in the inventory are checked on the server; requests are rate limited and amounts are clamped on the server.
-- Item and amount come from the client:
-- a cheat menu can ask for unlimited items
RegisterNetEvent('rack:take', function(item, count)
AddItem(source, item, count)
end)-- Simplified example
RegisterNetEvent('rack:take', function(rackId, item, count)
local src = source
local rack = Racks[rackId]
-- Does the player have a job that may use this rack?
if not rack or not HasJob(src, rack.job) then return end
-- Is the player next to the rack?
local pos = GetEntityCoords(GetPlayerPed(src))
if #(pos - rack.coords) > 3.0 then return end
-- The amount is clamped on the server
count = math.floor(tonumber(count) or 0)
count = math.min(count, rack.items[item] or 0)
if count <= 0 then return end
rack.items[item] = rack.items[item] - count
AddItem(src, item, count)
end)Escrow and open files
Most paid FiveM scripts are protected with Cfx asset escrow and assigned to your Cfx.re account. This prevents unauthorised redistribution, but the files you need to adapt to your server should stay open.
Ask which files stay open before you buy. Usually the config file (config.lua), the language files and the framework and inventory bridges should be open. In Gunrack, all of them are.
Languages, settings and delivery
If your server is in Turkish, the script should ship with a Turkish language file, or at least make adding a language easy. Jobs, vehicle models, keys and item names should live in the config file, not in the code.
On delivery, the script is added to your account on the Cfx.re portal; you place the folder in resources and add the start line. If you need help with the setup or settings tailored to your server, agree on that from the start.
Ready-made or custom?
If a ready-made script covers your need, that is the fastest path; it is fitted to your server through its settings. If you want a system unique to your server, you need a custom script. Either way, the questions above are the same.
You can write to us about the system you have in mind: describing your stack and the flow you want is enough.
