What Is a FiveM MLO? How to Make and Install One

On roleplay servers, police stations, hospitals, clubs and houses are often MLOs: buildings added to the game map afterwards that you can walk into. Below we explain what an MLO is, which files it is made of, how it is made and how it is installed on a server.

1. What does MLO mean?

MLO stands for Map Loader Object. It uses the same system as GTA V's own interiors: rooms, the openings between rooms (portals), and each room with its own lighting and sound. This lets a player walk inside from outside without a loading screen. Unlike a plain map add-on, it behaves like a real interior inside.

2. Which files is it made of?

An MLO usually contains these files: ydr (3D models), ytd (textures), ybn (collision, so players do not walk through walls), ytyp (the interior definition: rooms, portals and the objects inside) and ymap (where the building sits on the map). A missing or broken ybn is the most common reason players fall through the floor.

3. Which tools are used?

Modelling is mostly done in Blender; the Sollumz add-on lets Blender open and export GTA V file formats. CodeWalker is used to open the game map, place the building and edit the ymap and ytyp files. Setting up walls, lights and portals correctly is the longest part of the work.

4. Placement: watch for clashes

If an MLO is placed where the game's own buildings or another MLO already sit, the two overlap and objects flicker or vanish. Do not run two map add-ons that change the same area; before buying, check where the MLO sits on the map and whether it clashes with your own map.

5. How to install it on a server

An MLO is added to the server as a resource: a folder with a stream folder holding the files and an fxmanifest.lua. The manifest has a this_is_a_map 'yes' line and, if needed, a data_file line for the ytyp file. Put the folder inside resources and add an ensure line to server.cfg; then restart the server and walk through the building in game.

6. Performance

Lots of objects, large textures and unnecessary lights lower frame rates for players near the MLO. A well-made MLO switches to simpler models when seen from far away (LOD) and keeps textures at a sensible size. After installing, test how smoothly the game runs inside and around the building yourself.

7. Escrow and buying

Most MLOs on sale are protected by Cfx.re's escrow: the files only work with the licence key of the account that bought them and cannot be opened and moved elsewhere. When buying, make sure the MLO is sold with a licence through Tebex or the Cfx.re portal; a leaked MLO takes from the creator and is a risk for your server.

Scripts for your MLO

We do not make MLOs; we write the scripts that make an MLO work inside. Armory, for example, is a police armory script set up in an interior such as a station, where each weapon is signed out with its serial number; it is sold escrow-protected in our store. A script made for your server starts from $30 and is usually delivered in 3-7 days.
